Service Philosophy

Performance management is the essence of good management and leadership practices. It encompasses the complete cycle of working to improve and sustain human performance throughout the organization. Collectively, the performance of individual workers determines that of teams, departments, and ultimately, your entire enterprise.

People are most effective when:

  • They know what they are supposed to do, and have a degree of choice over how best to do it;

  • They have the capacity and resources to perform effectively;

  • They receive constructive feedback about their performance; and

  • There are appropriate methods and systems to reinforce their continuing desire and effort toward performance improvement.

The fundamental components of any performance management system, as represented in the figure below, are essentially the same. Because of these similarities across different systems, it is sometimes tempting to believe that developing and implementing a performance management system is simply a matter of attending to each component prescriptively. While some fundamental principles are relevant and applicable to any performance management effort, the real challenges are to develop and implement a system that works both for and with you and other organization members. If such challenges were typically successfully tackled, there would be more performance management system success stories in the working world than what currently exist.
