Traditionally, it was thought that pay had the greatest influence on an employee's motivation level. Later, that thinking was expanded to include benefits. Over time, benefits packages evolved from "one-size-fits-all" solutions to flexible "cafeteria" style solutions. Eventually, organizations stopped tried to compete on the basis of "hard" compensation alone, and added recognition strategies to their motivation plans. Today, we recognize the approach of a total motivation strategy that incorporates the traditional pay and benefits, but also includes less tangible dimensions.

Progressive organizations adopt a total motivation strategy to positively influence the desire and commitment of employees. They combine:

2) Intangibles such as management style, and culture; and
