Service Philosophy
Forget old-style orientations. Give your
employees what they need to do well for your business. Most
organizations have their new employees go through an orientation
process, supposedly for the purpose of helping them learn about, and fit
into their new environment.
Typically, orientation programs focus on
telling new employees about job duties, benefits packages, parking
schemes, office layout, and may include a cursory introduction to other
staff. Some go further and include efforts to indoctrinate the new hire
into the organization's culture. These are often informal efforts, with
someone from the Human Resources Department in charge of what is
considered a mundane, but necessary exercise.
Almost all orientation programs rely on
the 'fire hose' approach - they turn on a fire hose of information and
say, "Here, take a drink." Such an approach is not only ineffective, it
also leaves new hires feeling overwhelmed and disoriented. By the end of
it, an employee is lucky if they know where to find the washroom. They
are very unlikely to feel welcome, or to feel any degree of comfort
approaching anyone in the organization for answers to their questions,
except perhaps the Human Resources Officer that showed them around and
gave them their employee manual.
So, when we think about the purpose of
Orientation Programs - to help new hires learn about and fit into their
new environment - we need to ask how much potential for success a
typical Orientation Program has? The honest answer would be that it
would not have much success-potential at all. Orientations are not
merely 'nice to have extras.' They are an important strategy for
reducing the lag time for new employees to begin contributing to the
business needs of the organization. New hires need an orientation that
will help them be immediately more effective.
A well-designed Orientation Program can do
this as well as;
-
Reduce turnover within the first few
months of employment;
-
Improve immediate performance and
enhance long-term performance capacity;
-
Help other organizational members
integrate new employees faster; reducing potential unit disruption
and gaining more immediate benefits from new employees; and
-
Contribute to building a retention
culture within the organization, thereby reducing unwanted turnover
over the long-term.
